Collectible Coins in Your Change

Coin collecting can be a lot of fun, but can also be a daunting task when you are first getting started. Where do you start? And how do you find the coins that you want to collect? Well, the best place to get started is right in your own pocket! Today, I will review three of the most common coins that you might have a chance of finding in your change.

The first coin that you should have a fairly easy time still finding in circulation is the wheat penny. The wheat penny was in circulation from 1909 to 1958. Other names given to this penny is the Lincoln Wheat penny, the wheatback or Wheatie. While most of these coins are not highly valuable, some of them are. One of the most highly sought after coins is the 1909 San Francisco Wheat Penny, and can easily be worth as much as $10,000 depending on condition.

Another coin that is still possible to find in your pocket change is the Buffalo Nickel. This particular 5 cent piece was in circulation from 1913 to 1938. This coin is also known as the Indian Head nickel, due to its design. It is estimated that approximately 1 in every 25,000 nickels in circulation is currently a buffalo nickel, so keep your eyes open.

Another great coin that can get you started in your collecting is the winged liberty head dime (also known as the mercury dime). This dime was put into circulation in 1916 and ran until 1946. In particular, if you can find a mercury dime from the 1916 D issue, it can be quite valuable. There were only approximately 264,000 of these coins made.

Overall, these three coins, the wheat penny, the buffalo nickel, and the mercury dime can add some excitement to checking your pocket change! There are many more coins that you could be looking for, but these three can get you started on the road to a great coin collection.
